Naples, capital of the Campania region which includes the Amalfi Coast and the Isle of Capri, along with its eastern neighbor Pompeii, is flanked on the east by Mount Vesuvius and on the west by the Mediterranean Sea, actually the part called the Tyrrhenian Sea, with an interposing area of congealed lava patches which occasionally produces natural fireworks for visitors, an area named by literati throughout the years variously as the gates of Hades, the Elysian Fields and more commonly as the Campi Flegrei or “fields of fire.” Neapolitan culture reflects this intensity, giving rise to the popular caricatures associated with Italians which are in fact more representative of behavior in and around Naples than elsewhere in Italy. Although not always favored by tourists due to its reputation for crime and corruption, in the last twenty years Naples has launched a cultural renaissance in the downtown area, rejuvenating the parks and encouraging the return of playwrights, composers, performers, patrons and sidewalk cafes, making Naples now one of the more upscale venues along the Mediterranean coast.
